The first evidence of the presence of man dates back to Prehistory and precisely to the Neolithic (about 7000 years ago), when the coasts and the sea of the present MPA were involved in the transmarine trade from Sardinia to the continent, especially for the Sardinian obsidian market, with which various types of instruments were made. The islands of the MPA hosted, in the same period, a lagomorphic mammal (of the same family of the present rabbits and hares), the prolagus (recognizable in two species, Prolagus sardus at Tavolara and P. Figari at Capo Figari), which was an important part of the diet of the Neolithic man in Sardinia.
