The islands included in the MPA of Tavolara are characterized by naturalistic emergencies of absolute value, undoubtedly among the most important in the entire Mediterranean basin. In fact, they host the main nesting population of berta minor Puffinus yelkouan (between 1/3 and 2/3 of the global population of the species, the only case in the Mediterranean of a similar concentration of a sea bird), numerous plant species of absolute conservation interest (the only station of Centaurea horrida, an endemic Sardinian species classified as a priority by the EU, of eastern Sardinia) and other endemic species or species of Community interest as well as a variety of environments that is reflected in a very high number of habitats of Community interest, perhaps unparalleled in Italy.
